I Got Fired, And Here's the Truth Behind It

Let me tell you something I was fired... But not because I wasn’t doing well.

In fact, I had just scored a 95% on a mystery shopper! I was consistently leasing, and had glowing Google reviews. I was doing my job and doing it well.

I was professional, warm, and welcoming the way anyone with a background in hospitality is trained to be. I showed up, I smiled, I worked, and I cared. But here’s the part they don’t always tell you: When you shine too bright, it makes insecure people uncomfortable.

My manager didn’t need a reason to get rid of me. She didn’t confront me not until it came time to "write me up" (first one was not a write up as she stated). She was what I call a silent snake smiling to my face, watching behind the scenes, and quietly undermining me. When the day finally came, she exaggerated the reason for firing me, and when I calmly tried to share my perspective, she got flustered and defensive. Yet somehow, I was the one being let go. Tha

t’s when I realized it was never really about performance. It was about ego, power, and control.

I was blind to it at first, thinking maybe I just needed to work harder or be even nicer. But the truth is, it wasn’t about me doing poorly. It was about me being too good at something she couldn’t control. It wasn’t loud or obvious it was slow, silent, and cruel.

The Pain of Being Let Go

Getting fired, especially when you’re doing well, hurts. I felt confused, betrayed, and angry. But mostly I was sad. Sad that being talented, ambitious, and kind can still put a target on your back. But I';; let you know now that: It’s better to be let go by someone who can’t stand your light than to dim it just to survive.

My Takeaway

This was a lesson, a hard one, and one I needed. Not everyone in leadership is a leader. Not everyone who smiles at you is on your side. And sometimes, getting fired is the redirection you didn’t know you needed. So if someone’s treating you bad whether it’s at work or in life pay attention to the signs.

And sometimes, like in my case, you don’t even see them until it's too late but remember: that’s God’s redirection.

Please do not let that job, that boss, or that moment make you feel any less than what you are.

You are still valuable, and your path is still unfolding exactly how it should. And instead of questioning your worth, maybe it’s time to look elsewhere, somewhere that values what you bring.

To the Women Like Me...

If you’ve ever been silenced, overlooked, or mistreated Don’t shrink. Don’t settle. Don’t question your fire.

Hold your head high. Take the experience. Learn from it. And move on with grace because snakes can only thrive in the dark. And girl, you? You’re made of light!
